CAN YOU SPARE A COUPLE OF HOURS?
Could you spare a couple of hours or even a day every now and again to help us out here at Cuerden Valley Park?
Volunteering is a great way to get out, meet people, and learn and practice new and existing skills. We have loads of different opportunities– something for everybody. You could even be a Zombie!
Whatever your circumstances, whether you are retired and looking for something to keep you active, between jobs, lookng for experience or just wanting to help a good cause, volunteering could be just what you are searching for.
Help Build our innovative new Eco Visitor Centre and Café.
You can help build our new eco friendly Visitor Centre and Cafe which is being constructed out of straw bales, recycled tyres, wood from the Park and will also feature a ground source Heat Pump with the aim of becoming the first building in the country to receive the internationally recognised Living Building Challenge Award. We are currently working on the building Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday each week from 8.15 till 3. You are welcome to call any time even if you can only spare a couple of hours. No experience is necessary – just enthusiasm! Remember to bring boots and gloves, we will provide the rest of the equipment including any safety gear required. Brews are provided, but if you are staying all day, please bring a packed lunch.
Being a charity which receives no funding or support from local government, we are always looking for ways to raise money to cover the costs of maintaining the Park. Our main source of income is from the Events we organise each year – see the ‘What’s On’ tab for full details. We could not stage any of these without the help of volunteers who undertake a wide variety of roles from pulling pints at the Beer Festival to scaring people on the Spooky Walk. Other roles include manning the gates, stewarding, traffic control and helping set up for and take down after events. If you would like to help with any event, please get in touch.
One of the biggest problems we have on the Park is the proliferation of invasive species, in particular Himalayan Balsam. We are going to have a concerted effort to address this problem during the summer of 2017 in conjunction with Chris Taylor of the Lancashire Widlife Trust. The intention is to meet every Tuesday here at the Barn on Berkeley Drive at 10am to try and rectify the problem in as much of the Park as we can. The sessions will end at 3 but even if you can only spare an hour or so, please contact Matt Whittaker on 07967820744 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org For more details, click the link below.
We also have a regular conservation volunteer group who meet on the second Sunday of each month from 10 till 3 meeting at the Barn on Berkeley Drive. Keep an eye on the website for what we are doing each month, but this can be anything from river cleaning, control of invasive species, wild flower meadow maintenance, Hedge maintenance and tree thinning.
We have an extensive programme of school visits here at Cuerden Valley Park, receiving pupils from all over Lancashire and even further afield as the only location in Lancshire able to offer a River Studies Programme due to the many beneficial natural features of the shallow River Lostock winding through the Park. The Education programme, which also includes Harry Potter days, Forest Schools and Habitat Studies amongst others is delivered by our Education Officer, Clare Thompson with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers. If you would like to gain experience of working with children please contact us for more details. A DBS check will be required which will be undertaken at our expense.
We have a team of volunteers who help the Park Rangers throughout the week with any number of duties from path and tree maintenance, grass mowing, preparing and delivering firewood to tending to our flock of rare breed Jacobs Sheep. The list is both endless and varied! Basically, you will be helping do whatever needs doing to ensure the Park maintains its Green Flag status.
We are always looking for people with office skills to help with a variety of tasks including the preparation and design of publicity material, computer work, website design and event planning.
We will be opening a new cafe in the Park later in 2017 and will be looking for a team of reliable volunteers to help the Cafe Manager with food preparation and waiting services. If you are interested please get in touch.
If you would like to talk about any of the above opportunities, please either contact us using the box below or call the office on 01772 324436 asking for John Phillips.
Volunteers must be 16 years old to attend unaccompanied, or 13 years old if accompanied by an adult.
We hope to see you down here soon!
